Advanced Trengineering

That plucky little Tren engine can do some pretty amazing things. Not only is it incredibly zippy and versatile, it's also capable of pulling off some incredible feats that only the Tren-diest of people will be able to uncover. And we're here to give you a hand with that, so strap in!

Accelerate, mate!#

In Tren, the button is your best friend. A quick tap of it will speed Tren along, and you'll be surprised just how zippy it can be! More importantly, holding down will make Tren boost, accelerating to frankly unsafe levels, and if you time it just right on a ramp or bend, you can skip entire parts of a level! Just beware not to do it on every bend, or Tren might end up in pieces. Poor little thing.

Take note of numbers#

In Tren, numbers matter. Specifically, for the number of Grade Pips (see below) you'll need to get through gates. Branches, where most of the tracks can be found, need a certain amount of grade pips to access. Expert Spurs, which are at the end of each Branch and where you'll find the hardest tracks, need lots of them. Special Tracks, which you'll find scattered around, need even more. Branch gates are numbered as guide to direction, but you can go back and forward as much as you like - just need those Grade Pips to get through the gates!

The power of pips#

Grade Pips are awarded for how fast you complete each track. You'll get 1 for Bronze, 2 for Silver and 3 for Gold. Time deductions are given for tricks and successful deliveries. By completing tracks, you'll gather more pips, unlocking gates which give you access to more tantalising Tren times. You'll see your Grade Pips total in the top-left, tracking your progress across the game as a whole.

There are 285 pips across the game, so test yourself to gather as many as you can. Can you get them all and become the ultimate Trengineer?

Gotta Go Fast#

Boosting makes everything better. You can boost within tracks with , but don't overuse it or you'll have to wait for it to recharge! At the start of each track, if you hold when the countdown reaches 2, you can get a start boost, allowing you to casually flout the laws of speed, and start the track at an already inconceivable velocity. This is especially handy if you want to test yourself to see if you can complete each level in the fastest time possible.

Make Your Own Tren Tracks#

Because the Tren team are extra generous, they've only gone and provided another extensive kit for you to play with, featuring all the elements created for Tren. So if you've already mastered the Tren experience, why not have a go at creating and crafting your own levels and sharing them with others. You can make the Tren track of your dreams (and your friends' nightmares).

Get Some Airtime#

Whilst Tren is generally a vehicle much more suited to the ground, and being on rails in particular, it turns out that it can be pretty nifty in the air too. If you've just caught some serious air by taking Tren off a ramp or a jump, you can perform some flips and tricks in the air. We don't normally recommend that anyone should focus on style over substance, but in Tren you'll get a time bonus for a successful trick, so go for it!

Tips from the team#

Want some more quickfire tips? Here's some direct from the Tren team:

  • You can do a flip within a loop-the-loop if you time it right
  • Ramps aren't the only way to get air, be inventive
  • Sometimes a boost start isn't the quickest way to finish a level
  • Don't forget about reverse boost!
  • Tren can drift, but it's an extremely high risk manoeuvre
  • Sometimes a little air in the right place can help you avoid obstacles
  • Tactical checkpoint restarts are helpful in some tracks
