Understanding Limits

There are limits to how much stuff you can store in Dreams. These apply locally, i.e. on your console; and online, when you save or release stuff online to the Dreamiverse.

The limits are pretty high, so you might not hit them, but there’s plenty you can do to tidy up and store more efficiently if you do.

REMEMBER!

If you’re a veteran dreamer, i.e. one who was already using Dreams before the v2.57 update on May 22nd, 2023 and had creations saved locally and/or online, your limits will be a bit higher, because your existing creations won’t count towards your limits.

This page will cover:

This table shows you what your limits are, but you can also find them in-game if you use the LIMITS INFO button you’ll find on various Dreamiverse screens, including cover pages of creations.

WARNING!

Hitting your limits can prevent you from doing things like starting or editing creations, remixing, and taking photos. It’s best to deal with any limits issues as soon as they happen, so that you can continue creating and enjoying Dreams.

TOP TIP!

Whether you’re hitting a limit or not, it’s good practice to tidy up your creations and versions regularly. Having lots of versions and creations lying around can make it hard to manage your content. See the deletion page for more details.

REMEMBER!

Not everything counts toward your limits, only the following:

  • Creations you own
  • Photos you own
  • Versions of creations you own
  • A collaborator’s online versions of creations you own
  • Locally-saved versions of any creation, even if you’re a collaborator

Accessing Limits Info#

You can check your limits in-game using the LIMITS INFO button on the following pages: My Creations, Versions & Release, creation cover pages, the options menu while editing or playing, Delete Creations, My Photos, Photo Management and Delete Photos.

If the LIMITS INFO button is showing as MANAGE LIMITS then you’ve hit a limit and need to act on it.

STEP-BY-STEP#

1 - Hit the LIMITS INFO button or MANAGE LIMITS button.

2 - You’ll find yourself on the Limits Info page. Here you can switch between LOCAL and ONLINE.

3 - If you’ve hit a limit the LOCAL or ONLINE tabs will be highlighted red and with the symbol. A red arrow will highlight which specific limit needs attention.

4 - Depending on which limit you’ve hit, and where you accessed the Limits Info page from, you can use the buttons to go from here to manage photos, creations or versions.

If the Limits Page Appears Automatically#

Sometimes you’ll try to do something which you can’t do unless you address a limits breach, for example if you’ve hit your LOCAL creations limit and tried to start a new creation. If this happens, the Limits Info page will appear automatically, and you’ll find yourself in the LOCAL section. The specific limit you’ve hit will be highlighted.

Limits Info Page: LOCAL#

Here you’ll see all your LOCAL limits information in tabular form, with a header indicating either that you are within limits or, if not, which limit you have reached.

The buttons at the bottom will take you to where you can remedy your issue:

  • MANAGE CREATIONS - Takes you to the Local Deletion page where you can select creations to delete all LOCAL versions of. See Deleting Local Versions for more.
  • MANAGE PHOTOS - Takes you to the Delete Photos page where you can select photos to delete. See Deleting Photos for more.
  • MANAGE VERSIONS - This button only appears when you’ve accessed Limits Info via the creation’s cover page. Takes you to the Versions & Release page for the creation where you can delete individual LOCAL versions. See Deleting a Single Local Version for more.

Limits Info Page: ONLINE#

Here you’ll see all your ONLINE limits information in tabular form, with a header indicating either that you are within limits or, if not, which limit you have reached.

The buttons at the bottom will take you to where you can remedy your issue:

  • MANAGE CREATIONS - Takes you to the My Creations page, where you can select a creation to delete the whole thing. See Deleting a Whole Creation for more.
  • MANAGE PHOTOS - Takes you to the Delete Photos page where you can select photos to delete. See Deleting Photos for more.
  • MANAGE VERSIONS - This button only appears when you’ve accessed Limits Info via the creation’s cover page. Takes you to the Versions & Release page for the creation where you can delete individual ONLINE versions. See Deleting an Online Version for more.

BEST PRACTICE!

To help avoid hitting your creation limit, you can reduce the number of Elements you store by having multiple objects in one Element.

For example, say you have a Desk, a Monitor and a Chair saved as 3 separate Elements. Stamp them all into one Scene and save it as an Element (called e.g. Office Setup) and you can safely remove the original Elements.

As well as saving space, this also has the advantage that, if you’re not the owner of the original 3 Elements, you’ll still have them should the owner delete them.

WARNING!

Note that when you stamp a LOCAL creation into another LOCAL creation, this creates a relationship between them. These creations are now ‘related’ to each other. So in the example above, when you attempt to delete the Desk, Monitor or Chair Elements, you may be required to delete the LOCAL versions of the Office Setup Element as well (but not any online versions). For more details on this deletion flow, see Understanding Related Creations and Versions.

REMEMBER!

In the Best Practice example above, you can still save an individual Element from the Office Setup Element. Simply select, say, the Monitor and use Save as a New Creation in the context menu.
