Dreamview Weekly Roundup #23

DreamsCom ‘21 is now behind us, and so it’s back to our regularly scheduled format for the Dreamview Weekly Roundup after last week’s little shake-up. Yes, we’ve got five fantastic creations you can play in Dreams - not just on the DreamsCom show floor. Booths begone!

Wait a minute. We’re being told that even though the show has come to a close, the show floor - featuring all those incredible booths - is still playable? And it’ll remain so… forever? Well, that’s wonderful news. Booths: we didn’t mean it. Please stick around. (Does anyone know if booths can grow legs and walk off? If they can grow opposable thumbs, we’re in serious trouble.)

This walkable museum is a masterclass in architecture, showcasing the art of its three creators in an unforgettable locale. The Idyllium is a Brutalist’s dream, all grey concrete walls and stark lighting. Beyond its limits, a city skyline hums on the horizon. But you’ll likely be too transfixed by the surreal sculptures and paintings on display to pay much attention to that. This space is otherworldly, an art gallery like no other. Not only does the building frame certain art pieces with angles and doorways as you wander the halls, but - as you’ll be informed early on - it also physically shifts, various sculptures and entire new wings (looking at you, Gallery Of Bevis) unfolding before your very eyes. Prepare to wear out your Share button.

Maybe high-brow museums aren’t your thing, though. Perhaps you’re looking for some good old-fashioned stunt bikin’ action this week. Rejoice! Zed has finally arrived to provide just that in the form of this polished homage to Trials and Joe Danger. Three fiendish challenge courses await you, as does scoreboard glory - as long you’re able to boost and flip safely along each level to rack up points, avoiding landing on Zed’s poor noggin and resetting your attempt. It’s a solid entry point for Dreams newcomers, but old hands will chuckle at the knowing winks to the coMmunity. Oh, and did we mention there’s also an entire new girlfromcroydon shmup that’s playable in Zed’s customisable apartment? Wild.

We love a good coMmunity-created challenge - especially when it’s friendly to newcomers. Sketchy’s Sketch Pad offers a blank page for everyone to practise (or show off) doodling in Dreams, and it couldn’t be easier to take part. Simply hit ‘remix’ on the sketchpad provided, then enter Play mode using your Options button to open the sketchbook with the touch pad. Head back into Edit mode, then enter Paint mode and get to scribbling those flecks. Top tip: turn on Surface Snap in the Guides menu to have your paint stick to the page!

Gouldian Free Fall#

Twitch Dreams radio show Dreams Sounds turned 1 this week - we recommend catching up with the listening party(opens in new tab) - and the resulting throwback playlist introduced us to this transcendent post-rock theme by RAKeogh (itself based on a version written by Dj_Frags-_-), who surely has to be one of the most talented indie musicians out there. This is the kind of track 65daysofstatic would be envious of, a wall of sound that makes you want to look up at the stars as the rain soaks you through to the bone. Dreams Sounds curator and fellow Molecule Ally Mitchell (The_Tenia) sums it up nicely: “If Mogwai did this, it would be in every single TV advert for every single drama series.” Headphones recommended.

FLOWORLD#

By venwave and gek0h

Venwave’s hallmark as a creator is a kind of unique, unabashed expression of joy - you may recall the heartfelt Drag Flower 2 The Exit making us cry actual tears in the first-ever Roundup(opens in new tab). It’s in full flow (sorry) here in this psychedelic theme park-slash-coMmunity concert, made in collaboration with gek0h, which allows you to customise your character and then explore biomes set across various seasons. It’s filled with collectibles, rides and minigames, charming NPCs and secrets - as well as tributes to friends and collaborators (full disclosure: the author of this article receives a shoutout). There’s something undeniably giddy and nostalgic about its cluttered, colourful style, which clamours for your attention from all angles. It feels like a carnival dedicated to a niche Japan Studio game you never knew existed. A rare treasure.
