7 Of The Best... VR Games in Dreams

The real world is overrated. Who wants to feel the gentle caress of wind on their face, play with their pet, or watch a loved one cook their favourite meal, when you could instead strap two screens directly to your eyes and bear witness to untold digital wonders?

Calling all non-nerds, then: thanks to a dedicated community of creators, Dreams has a suite of fantastic virtual reality experiences for you to enjoy from the comfort of your PSVR headset. From magical rollercoasters to platforms set deep in lush jungles, challenging escape rooms to racing games that really put you in the driving seat, get ready to enter some of the very best VR games and experiences in Dreams.

STARCOASTER VR#

by yken-sao

Estimated playtime: 5 mins

Who’s got time to wait in line? This VR rollercoaster experience eliminates all the unwelcome parts of visiting a theme park - long queues, screaming children, the faint possibility of death - while adding magical aspects only possible in a virtual world. You’ll speed through vast oceans, icebound spires and starry skies in firstperson, feeling every dip, roll and turn and taking on more loops than a sugar-addled kid at breakfast. A strong stomach is recommended, but not all the thrills on offer here involve dangling you upside-down at 100 miles per hour: one unforgettable moment sees the ride slow down for a stretch, letting you drink in the sight of a giant, bioluminescent whale swimming above your head.

Left To Rot [HORROR]#

by Denjo92

Estimated playtime: 2 hrs

VR and horror go together like chocolate and cheese, in that the combination might sound terrifying, but it’ll actually change your life for the better. Out of all the excellent horror games in Dreams - and there are many, as chronicled here - this firstperson sneak-’em-up takes the biscuit for the best VR scares, due to its claustrophobic setting and ruthless AI enemies. You’re trapped inside a prison and are trying to break out, creeping through the dark to find keys and weapons (which randomise for each run, just to make things extra difficult). The problem? There are other, more awful things trapped in there with you. If you’re an Amnesia fan, this will certainly appeal to your tastes - and if you thought peeking around corners in those games raised the pulse, wait until you’re doing it for real in VR.

THE RANGE#

by KarstenStaack

Estimated playtime: Replayable

True immersion relies on detail, and there’s plenty of it in THE RANGE, a VR-compatible firstperson shooting range that’s a true test of dexterity. Each of the 9 different firearms you’ll be presented with has its own unique button combinations allowing you to load, cock, aim, fire and reload the weapon. You’ll have to learn each individual sequence to take down targets around the warehouse at top speed, and climb the leaderboards in time-attack and high score modes. The skill ceiling on this simulator is extraordinarily high, but the payoff for finally mastering a particular gun is a genuine rush - in VR, the accuracy of the audio design and visual feedback is almost shocking. In a medium where it’s all too easy to spray and pray, THE RANGE does a remarkable job of making firing a bullet feel like a big deal.

The Jungle Bill series#

by NibblersBox

Estimated playtime: 3 hrs

Are you the kind of person that spends more time gawping at the incredible realism and scale of the environments in the Uncharted and Tomb Raider games than punching goons in the head? Then the Jungle Bill series is for you. These 3D platforming adventures are a masterclass in level design, leading you deep into mysterious pockets of rainforest and ancient ruins with the promise of hidden treasure. (It may not surprise you to learn that when they’re not making games, NibblersBox commands an audience’s eye through their job as a visual and performance artist in Las Vegas.)

Architectural elements draw the gaze to certain areas, or frame scenes. Entering firstperson mode allows you to get your face all up in that detailed stonework, while switching to the thirdperson view comes in handy for trickier platforming challenges (and ensures you don’t lose your lunch). The sequel, Jungle Bill 2, adds even more ways to appreciate the sheer scale of these places via biplane and panoramic camera - a reminder that, for NibblersBox, adventure isn’t just about near misses and narrow escapes, but taking a moment to enjoy the view.

Estimated playtime: 30 mins

Get ready to experience an escape room like no other. Complete a level in this series of virtual reality puzzle boxes, and the whole place will shapeshift around you, presenting you with a brand new brainteaser. The objective, however, remains exactly the same each time: press the correct button. What starts out as a simple series of visual gags soon evolves - through careful and gradual introduction of the rules - into brilliant lateral thinking puzzles that involve your body as much as they do your mind. Invisible mazes and secret panels make the very most of VR, throwing up obstacles right in front of your face or encouraging you to grab at anything of use you can find (if you love ripping stuff off walls, then this is truly the game for you). Tactile, surprising, and with a final flourish that’ll have your eyes popping out of your headset, this is an escape room challenge that could only be possible in VR.

Driving at prohibitively high speeds is fun. But you know what’s even more fun? Driving at prohibitively high speeds underneath the still-crumbling wreckage of a beachside metropolis. Yes, your first lap in this racing sim is breezy enough, the late-day sun dazzling in your eyes as you drift around corners and gun the engine through straight sections of the track. But it’s the second lap that will likely knock the wind out of you. Things all go a bit Split/Second, as skyscrapers’ knees give way, and entire chunks of road crack into conveniently extreme ramps for you to tear across at max velocity. It’s truly a sight to behold in VR - we find ourselves flinching more than once as giant hazards barely miss our windshield, then channel all the extra adrenaline into gaining a podium place on the leaderboards. With three different game modes to enjoy, and even the ability to customise your car’s paint job and detailing, these are the most high-octane racing thrills available without incurring a fine. Or invoking the end of the world.

Imagination VR: DINOSAURS!#

by LifeAsNeil

Estimated playtime: 5 mins

We don’t know about you, but we’re a bit sad we missed out on dinosaurs. Some days we feel like we were born in the wrong Mesozoic period. But here comes LifeAsNeil with a virtual reality safari that gives us a glimpse of what might have been. Hop in the jeep, and you’ll be taken on a tour of a park containing all manner of fancy lizards - close enough to reach out and touch, were that in any way advisable. Interaction is light, but immersive: the possibility of switching on your windscreen wipers for a clearer view, or the ability to give a particularly handsome triceratops two big thumbs up. The dramatic setpieces are breathtaking in virtual reality, but it’s the overarching conceit that ends up speaking to our nostalgic hearts the most. You’re actually a kid playing with toy dinosaurs in their room, imagining what it’d be like if they actually came to life - a scenario that vividly recalls our own sense of childhood wonder.
