Alpine Dream (Snowboarding)#

by TheOtterbon

Estimated playtime: Replayable

Remember that spate of really good extreme sports games in the 90s and early 00s? Well, The Impsider remembers, and on top of showing our age, Alpine Dream (Snowboarding) is an excellent representation of that most tubular time period. As the title so subtly gives away, this is a snowboarding game in the vein of classic titles like SSX. Yet whilst the fast-paced snowboarding action is all present and correct, it also benefits from an excellent Dreamiverse twist, in the sense that it too is very focused on the ethereal.

By that we mean the Aether state, a state of focus where you can pull off almost unlimited tricks... until you run out of the meter that is. But whilst you're in that most zen moment of flow, the feeling of unlimited brag-worthy moves is unparalelled. After a while, you might find yourself entering your very own flow state, as the pleasant game rhythm of grinding, pulling off tricks, and attempting to land gracefully provides us with a muscle memory experience we haven't felt in a long time. We might have to wait a little longer for snowboarding games to come back into style, but at least we'll have Alpine Dream to tide us over.

Frontier#

Estimated playtime: Replayable

Frontier's title really ain't kidding around. This open world driving experience puts you right in the driving seat of a racing adventure that sees you cruising across rugged desert, frigid mountain terrain, and flashy cities. And these environments really are something to behold, as there is a level of open world craft and mastery that would put many similar games to shame. The level of freedom on offer is truly staggering, as the entire world is unlocked for you from the start, and the roads are handed over to you to mess around in as you see fit. But it's not just the world that is impressive, the cars themselves are a real treat for racing fans. With slick handling, and a powerful boost, this is a game that will really excite fans of the genre. Racing may not be the forefront of this experience, as it is much more focused on the exploratory aspects of the game, but you absolutely can hit some truly blistering speeds here which may or may not melt your eyeballs (let us know if they do, as we are curious about this). And for something a bit more apocalyptic, check out this creative duo's other work, Tectonic, which has you driving through collapsing terrain and racing to avoid natural disasters.

Estimated playtime: 2 hours

Okay, we know what you're thinking. HeliTaxi is more of a driving game than a racing game. And frankly it's just barely a driving game, as this is A FLYING CAR. Semantics aside, it is one of the more interesting vehicle mastering games in the Dreamiverse. You play as a new HeliTaxi driver, getting to grips with the roads (read: skies) of the techno-futurist cityscape of Van Alder. As all cities are, it's full of people who need transporting and chauffeuring around from place to place, and you'll encounter these little stories as you drive. It's a really unique experience, as these passengers all tell their own stories, talk about their destinations, and give you an insight into their lives. And even more impressively, all of these passengers are fully voiced by Dreams coMmunity members who've lent their impressive vocal talents to the game. How does that sound? Fast enough for you yet? Okay, fine, if you're still not satisfied with all that, then maybe you should check out a little spin-off game called HeliTaxi - Racing to get your speed fix, where you can race other taxi drivers and get the best times in order to make your passengers happy. Tch, as if we needed a reason to go fast.

OPEN-WORLD BOXING GAME#

by hipporick

Estimated playtime: 3 hours

The title to Open-World Boxing Game really tells you everything you need to know before you've even begun. But it also hides just as much as it gives away. Whilst this is indeed an Open-World Boxing Game, it also includes a wonderfully dry sense of humour and excellent comedic timing. The goal of this free-roaming box-em-up is to become a boxing champion. The only problem is... you kinda suck. At least at first. In fact, the first time you fight anyone, you get the ever-loving snot beaten out of you. Like everything worthwhile in life, it takes time to git gud at the pummelling mayhem of the boxing ring, as you ascend through the ranks to beat up EVERYONE.

Along the way, you can explore a fair chunk of the city, provoking fisticuffs with anyone and most likely everyone you come across. You can explore locations from a seedy nightclub, to your regular haunt of the boxing gym, and even your own apartment! Top tip: check out the Rainbo Arcade for some top tier arcade machine side questery. If nothing else, it's worth playing just to see captions like "laughs in British" and "mumbles in British", or be called broccoli head by some yob. Nice to finally see some British representation!

Zed Exodus Series#

by TRIX9, girlfromcroydon and Joeycutts83

Estimated playtime: Replayable

Okay, time for a return to some pulse-pounding action as we join stuntman simulator extraordinaire Zed Exodus in another death-defying display of digital destruction. Both Zed Exodus and its stunting sequel are excellent games for getting your Evel Knievel fix, without either getting off the sofa or breaking all your bones (both equally distressing prospects). This classic high score chasing series is packed to the rafters with attitude, insane danger, and thrills from the catchy soundtrack to its frankly overly-energetic V/O. Levels play out with a series of thrilling obstacles as you ride your bike through a set of increasingly tricky environments like flaming rings and ramps. This leads to the question of how you want to complete the objectives in each level, will you go for the hidden targets, collectibles, highest score, secret stars, or fastest time? The possibilities are endless! Well, they do come to an end actually, but like all good things it features a bevvy of bonus content so you can both win prizes and customise Zed's apartment at your leisure.

Gridlock'd#

by atheistsw, arepera, and animeboy0021

Estimated playtime: Replayable

We all know road rage can be a thing, yeah? But there's road rage, and then there's... whatever the heck is going on in Gridlock'd. This game challenges you to drive down a highway at speeds that would be described in court as 'at severe risk of endangering life'. Regardless of the consequences of your reckless actions, Gridlock'd is a delightfully devilish game of cat and mouse, as getting as close to other cars as you can without hitting them rewards you with extra points as you aim for that ever elusive high score.

But you do have to be careful, as your sweet ride can only take so many hits before we assume it crumples into oblivion in a fiery explosion that would make a personal injury lawyer break into a cold sweat. Ultimately, it's the combination of death-defying speeding, high quality risk-reward mechanics, and a soundtrack composed by some of the Dreamiverse greats that makes this one of the best sports and racing games in Dreams. We just know this game wouldn't work on UK roads, though. Our streets are too, well let's just say, curvaceous to allow for this kind of experience.

Redline Turbo#

by Carambazmg

Estimated playtime: 2 hours

There's a lot to do in Redline Turbo, as this fast paced arcade racer is stuffed with content. There's mutiple cars to find, a huge world to explore, and even a variety of collectables to acquire. It's a good thing that Redline Turbo's urban industrial open world is an utter joy to drive around then, eh? Tracking down and unlocking those additional vehicles as you explore is a real treat, and their locations often come as quite a surprise ('Press to collect car' sure is one of the button prompts of all time). But it's not quite as simple as just pressing , then heading down to The Winchester for a swift pint and waiting for all of this to blow over. Nope, if you want to keep that fancy new set of wheels then you have to drive it back to your garage within a very tight time window. This creates a real sense of challenge within the world of Redline Turbo, as you really have to work to get your upgrades and more powerful cars. All this excitement paired with a pumping techno soundtrack makes this one of the best sports and racing games in Dreams.
