Tales from Dark Town: Red Zone#

by DirtyFlusher, dinox11, and FlashMedallion

Estimated playtime: 30 minutes

Classic RPGs are loved for their quirky characters, strong combat mechanics, and unique worlds, and the Tales from Dark Town series delivers this through its humorous style within a dark and dreary land. These small but perfectly formed experiences capture the spirit of classic Japanese RPGs, with a stunning isometric style and dynamic turn-based battle system reminiscent of the best RPGs of yore (by which we mean the '90s. No, you're old). But it does change up the traditional formula: enemy designs are a particular highlight, featuring a variety of creatures created from junk and scrap metal. Yes, you can hit the robot worm with a baseball bat. That’s not a sentence we thought we’d be typing today, but it does earn Tales from Dark Town a spot on the list of some of the greatest role-playing adventure games in Dreams.

SWORD OF AKAANA#

by Luke_972 and rukkurt

Estimated playtime: 2 hours

If we were to sum up Sword of Akaana in one word, it would be: vast. This stunning open-world RPG shows just how epic the worlds created in Dreams can be, with the land of Althera boasting huge open areas, mischievous monsters, and a bustling city packed with NPCs just dying to moan at you about today’s plight. Featuring a full action battle system that lets you use your Synergy gauge to switch between characters and unleash deadly combo attacks, this may bear the 'demo' moniker, with more updates slated for future releases, but it already feels like a complete experience in its own right. A soaring soundtrack really adds to the sense of going on an impossible quest to save the world - whilst either getting way too distracted by or totally spacing on your sidequests in the process. Sorry about forgetting the buffalo monster meat, Doris.

Cosmic Tale#

by Bohaala, Prince_Tahra, gek0h, xenomorphgirl, pierogigon, The_Tenia, Mezzyartiist, and kimerakii

Estimated playtime: Length varies

If you came to this article hoping for Final Fantasy-level spectacle and bosses with obscenely large health bars, then get a load of Cosmic Tale. This series simply oozes grandeur through an impressive and varied art style, and evolving gameplay that pits you against ferocious enemies and unforgiving wildernesses. The particle effects are particularly impressive, providing each spell with a truly magical sense of conjuring arcane witchery; prepare to see some spectacular fireworks as you smite any enemy foolish enough to get in your way. As of the time of writing, there are four of these superb adventures to tackle, but each of them is worth your time if you're an appreciator of fully-voiced stories and fantastic combat.

MIMEO PROPHECY#

by raz0rbackzwei

Estimated playtime: 3-4 hours

Bringing things a tad closer to reality, MIMEO PROPHECY will make you yearn for a childhood you might have never had, exploring your hometown and adventuring with your friends in a suburban town. Well, actually, that’s quite normal for most kids - but messing around with a dangerous secret technology that sets you off on a multi-hour adventure across a variety of fantastical locations is perhaps more unusual. Regardless of your childhood experiences with cyber shenanigans, MIMEO PROPHECY is a fantastic action RPG, teaming you up with a bunch of school friends seeking to uncover a mystery. Its small-scale hometown vibes are wholesome, and feel much more intimate than the grand scale of some RPGs - there’s no facing down against ancient rogue gods here, and building friendships and protecting your community is the order of the day. Most importantly, yes - you can pet the dog.

HEROES OF ALDRENOR-Co-op Fantasy RPG#

by DarkestEssence

Estimated playtime: 1 hour

What do you get when you cross a thief, a warrior and a mage? Well, quite a lot of fantasy media - but you also happen to get one of the best RPGs in Dreams. HEROES OF ALDRENOR is a fantasy action RPG tasking an unlikely crew of heroes with a quest to rescue the King’s crown. What DarkestEssence has really excelled at here is crafting memorable personalities for the three heroes, and a battle system in which each hero plays completely uniquely. Pick from a stealthy thief, a powerful warrior, or a flame-flinging sorceress, and defeat your enemies with flair (or flare?). Personally, we pick setting stuff on fire every time. Mmm, toasty.

STEAMBOUND#

by donut_mutt

Estimated playtime: 1 hour

STEAMBOUND must be one of the most complete experiences in the Dreamiverse, with a lengthy campaign, tactical combat, and beautifully grim locations. Very little story is given away from the start, with your customisable mystery bearded bloke (let’s call him Gary) arriving at unfamiliar shores via boat. From there, Gary quickly starts to dispatch the hordes of zombies summoned by an evil cult by bashing them over the head with a spanner, as you do. But the most satisfying element of the refined gameplay has to be the multi-use dash teleport ability, allowing you to dodge out of the way of enemies, cross chasms, and solve puzzles with just one move. Check it out - you’re BOUND to love it (sorry).

Shadows Dance at Olivetop Reach: A Little RPG#

by Mandelbo

Penka Totts is an adorable little witch who has the power to set sentient mushrooms alight by utilising the flames of the heavens to smite her prey! Okay, maybe that was a little dramatic - but despite her diminutive appearance and rosy cheeks, Penka doesn’t hold back with her magical abilities. And neither does the gameplay, which incorporates a strategic turn-based card grid battle system. As a result, fights are always revealing new layers, providing significant tactical opportunity to create the Penka you want to play as. The game also features a sweeping soundtrack and some absolutely stunning vistas, so it’s the complete package. And don’t worry - you won’t just be burning mushrooms on your adventures. You can also set fires to pixies and other magical creatures, too! It’s only fair.
