World
The Land of Monsters was once part of the world-spanning human empire, after the 'dirty undesirables' were all driven underground by conquering 'heroes'. During the great monster uprising of the second age, the monsters took back a huge chunk of the world as their own, evicting the humans and dividing the continent in two. As such, the Land of Monsters is filled with ancient architecture and artifacts of human culture, now reclaimed by its indigenous inhabitants. Famously bad at learning their lessons, human heroes love to venture into its ruins, caverns and tombs in search of lost riches and treasures.
Stoneheart Tomb#
A mausoleum located deep inside the cemetery beyond the temple ruins, not far from the Grand Bazaar. Ancient texts suggest that there may be a cyclopean labyrinth in the tomb, containing marvellous treasures, as well as some rather unpleasant undead. Local rumours hint at a band of unruly Rock Golems also taking up residence here, though nobody has actually survived to see them.
Thornstrike Ruins#
The location of Thornstrike Castle was lost in the mists of time following its demise in centuries past. It was once the home of an eccentric wizard, who was obsessed with weaponising plants with magic to defeat his many enemies. As you may have inferred from the current state of the place, things did not end well. Thornstrike's corpse was retrieved and interred in a mystery location - along with his many secrets - but his treasures are rumoured to still be hidden in the castle ruins, guarded by murderous plant monsters.
Dragonfire Citadel#
Located in the farthest regions of the Land of Monsters, amongst the Dragonspine Mountains. Nestled between two volcanoes (Mildred and Marjorie) it benefits from the geothermal vents in its foundations. Dragons do get chilly easily, and a free source of toasty warm central heating is very much appreciated, thank you very much. The dungeons under the Citadel are mostly populated with monsters who have wandered in from the caverns nearby; in the dragons' eyes, anyone tracking in mud and making a racket deserves to be locked up for a lifetime.
