Dreamview Weekly Roundup #18

Anything new been happening in the Dreamiverse this week? A lost penguin, you say? Well, we suppose that’s pretty exciting. But you know what else has all our fellow kids a-bopping and a-jiving? That’s right: good old-fashioned WORDS. A digestive cocktail of WORDS to sip on at the end of the week. Wholesome AND trendy - that’s the Dreamview Weekly Roundup for you. Okay, we’re being told the penguin game has explosions, and flexing. We don’t have any of that. Um. Will you read it anyway? We do have recommendations for five brilliant Dreams creations to get your eyes and thumbs around this weekend. Hey, “cool by association” is still cool.

Golfito#

by Nielgarz

There’s nothing quite like golf. Precise. Peaceful. Loads of those big delicious free mints everywhere. You know, the spherical ones? Love ‘em. Nielgarz perfectly distills the minty magic of the king’s game with Golfito, which has you take on all manner of unlikely holes - from vertical levels that require powerful shots to climb in as few strokes as possible, to hazardous courses with pits that threaten to swallow your precious mint before you do. Golfito lays on accessible controls and a broad array of physics puzzles to solve and things to enjoy, including some entertaining customisation options, but doesn’t skimp on the details: we adore the tense music that plays when you get close to ’sinking a mint’, as the pros say. What do you mean, you’re not supposed to eat them?

Super Duper Fruity Juicy Juice!#

by byvsen

Debuting at this year’s annual Impy awards, Bysven’s irresistibly zesty fake commercial is an ideal match for the product it’s selling: the eponymous Super Duper Fruity Juicy Juice. The creator’s now-iconic original characters, Green Guy and Bo, are a delight to watch, animated as characterfully as there are smoothly (no pulp here!). The best bit? Undoubtedly the end, where an excited camera operator is heard whisper-singing along to the infectious jingle, and has to be shushed. We feel ya, buddy - this song’s been stuck in our brains since February.

The Path Of Illusions#

by Todu

Now here’s something that’s always great to see happen in Dreams. Todu (who we know better as insolitejeu on Twitter) impressed us with their ’visual experiment’ The Room Of Illusions not so long ago(يفتح في علامة تبويب جديدة), in which they used text gadgets only to create the convincing effect of being able to peer into other worlds. In The Path Of Illusions, they translate this proof-of-concept into a brilliant little puzzle game: oftentimes, reality is not quite what it seems, and looking through these portals offers the clues you need to progress. There are some truly inventive brainteasers to solve (and some nice non-interactive showcases of other famous illusions along the way, even if they feel a little irrelevant to the main event). We hope the creator is keen to keep exploring this concept - there are the makings of something special here.

Fallen Kingdom#

by Chris_Redwalker6

Lighting is not an easy thing to get right - but it’s the star of the show in this explorable volcanic cavern, which glows red with fury, lava simmering through its rocky veins. That’s saying something with sculpture of this quality: at moments, we almost believe we’re clambering through the remains of a real lost civilisation, so detailed are the crumbling ruins looming above us as we hop between red-hot cliff faces. It’s Chris_Redwalker6’s masterful presentation and preparation of the scene that truly takes their art to the next level, though, alongside a short but vivid description of the story behind this place. A piece of visual poetry.

Public Toilet#

by APE_MONKEY_BOY21

If the good people over at PC Gamer has taught us anything, it’s that videogame toilets are deeply important(يفتح في علامة تبويب جديدة). Public Toilet instantly caught our eye, then: it’s first and foremost a lighting test, but also an unwitting tribute to the eerieness of the public space in which we do our most private of business. Unsettling music plays as our eyes rove over the graffitied walls, the stained tank. Molecule-made character Kumi is also here, for some reason. There’s a surprise in the pan though - no, not like that - with plants growing up through the U-bend to greet us. Nature is healing.
