Using Update Mode

Update Mode helps you manage the different versions of any creations stamped into your creation, for example different Tree Elements in a Forest Scene.

This page will cover:

Getting Started#

For Elements and Scenes, in Edit Mode, open the Modes menu and (if there are updates available) select Update Mode. If there are updates to anything in your creation the button will have a notification counter on it. If there are no updates the button will be greyed-out.

For Dreams and Collections, in Edit Mode, select Update Mode. Again, the button has a notification counter if anything has been updated. This button is always available whether there are updates or not.

Once in Update Mode, you can scroll left and right with / between the different objects in your creation. Objects with updates available are marked with the icon.

Different Creation States#

A stamped creation can be in one of four states:

1 - Stamped Creation: The usual state where no update is available.

2 - Update Available: Highlighted with the icon to indicate a new version is available.

3 - Unavailable Version: If a version is unavailable (e.g. if it’s been deleted) it’ll be marked with the icon shown.

4 - Unavailable Creation: If the whole creation is unavailable it’ll be marked with the icon shown.

Actions Where an Update is Available #

  • Inspect Version : Preview the new version. You can return using the options menu and Back to Previous Creation.
  • Update Now : Update to the latest version.
  • Select Objects (Elements & Scenes only): Selects the object within Edit Mode. Very helpful if you want to quickly locate it.
  • Auto Update : Switch on to always update to the latest version.

Actions Where No Update is Available#

  • Update to a Specific Version : Choose the exact version you wish to update to.
  • Select Objects (Elements & Scenes only): Selects the object within Edit Mode. Very helpful if you want to quickly locate it.
  • Auto Update : Switch on to always update to the latest version.

TOP TIP!

It’s a good idea to use Auto Update on items within Collections and Dreams, so that you always have the latest version available.

General Actions#

Additionally you have these two general options:

  • Accept All Updates (if an update is available): Will accept all new updates.
  • Replace local changes (Elements & Scenes only): When on, updating to versions where you’ve made changes will override any changes you’ve made in situ. See example below.

Example:

  • You have a Tree Element in a Forest scene with green leaves, with logic to make it sway.
  • Within the Scene, you change the leaves to blue and make the swaying faster.
  • Later, in the original Tree Element itself, you make the swaying slower.
  • Later still you return to the Forest Scene and update the Tree Element to the latest version.
  • The leaves remain blue (because you didn't touch those in the latest version of the original), but the swaying changes to slower (because you changed this in the original).

STEP-BY-STEP: When Your Release is Blocked by a PRIVATE Element#

Let's look at a situation where Update Mode can be super useful. Specifically, using the Select Objects button in Update Mode when you're trying to locate a PRIVATE element in your scene which is blocking your release.

You can’t release as PUBLIC a Scene which contains PRIVATE Elements which you don’t own (though you can still release it as PLAYABLE). Should you want to release your Scene as PUBLIC, you can either contact the owner of the PRIVATE Element to change the permission to PUBLIC, or find the PRIVATE Element in your Scene and delete it.

You can read more about PRIVATE versions blocking a release here.

Follow these steps to delete the PRIVATE Element:

1 - In Edit Mode in the Scene containing the PRIVATE Element, open the Modes menu and select Update Mode.

2 - In Update Mode, select the Element which is PRIVATE and blocking your release.

3 - Hit the Select Objects button to select the offending article in-scene.

4 - Delete it with the button in the context menu or by pressing

STEP-BY-STEP: When Your Release is Blocked by an Unavailable Version#

Update Mode works differently in Dreams and Collections to the way it works in Scenes and Elements.

If the release of your Dream is blocked by an unavailable version, you can either:

  • Update to a newer version (if available).
  • Delete the unavailable version.

To update to a newer version:

1 - In Edit Mode in the Dream with an unavailable version, select Update Mode.

2 - In Update Mode, select the unavailable version.

3 - Hit Update Now.

To delete the unavailable version:

1 - In Edit Mode in the Dream with an unavailable version, select the unavailable version.

2 - Use to delete it.

For Collections, your release shouldn’t be blocked by an unavailable version stamped into it, but note that these creations won’t appear for other dreamers viewing the Collection.

If the release of your Scene or Element is blocked by an unavailable version, the reasons the version is unavailable become important. Is it a PRIVATE version that you’re not a collaborator on? Or has it been deleted? Depending on this you have a couple of options:

REMEMBER!

If the owner of an Element makes the specific version you have used in your Scene unavailable, you’ll still be able to use it in your Scene. You just won’t be able to update it unless you replace it with a new version, in which case you’ll lose any edits you’ve made.

If you are updating a previously PRIVATE version to a new PUBLIC version, then afterwards you’ll need to update your permissions on the release summary page for the version to release the version as PUBLIC too (more info here).

If you want to be always up to date on the latest version consider turning on Auto Update.
