Play & Edit Walkthrough
This guide takes you through each Play & Edit lesson, to help you out if stuck or if you just want a heads-up on the contents.
Lesson 1#
The floor is misaligned!#
It’s vital that your 2D platformer is created on-grid and that the floor is aligned correctly so that the puppet won't fall to an unexpected death. Move the platform to the correct place so it’s in line with the other platforms.
Lesson 2#
That’s too high to jump!#
Our puppet can only jump so high, but there are many ways you can help the puppet get where they need to be. You could use a Bounce Pad to have them jump up the platform; a block to jump on; a Timed Fan so that they have to wait; or maybe a Double Jump Chip. The choice is yours!
Lesson 3#
Cloning collectables!#
Dreams has a fancy copying tool called clone (find out more in the Start Dreaming 3 tutorial). To clone, hold , grab an object with , then let go of and you'll have a copy of object on the tip of your imp. Clone the collectable into the designated spots to continue.
Lesson 4#
Remember to help players!#
If you have hazards in your level a puppet could get hurt, so consider that they may need healing. You need to find the Health Restore Pickup in the Enemies & Pickups collection in the kit and stamp it with to progress.
Lesson 5#
Fun with teleporters!#
Perhaps one of the tricksier bits of the 2D Platformer kit. You need to use their internal switches to define a matching colour/pattern on both the Teleporter Entrance and Teleporter Destination. Turn on x-ray in the show/hide menu to see the switches, and then make sure your Entrance and Destination are matching in colour/pattern, i.e. they have the same switches on. They will always appear in the same order and they have descriptive names to help you identify a match.
Lesson 6#
Enemies!#
The enemies in the 2D platformer just work - all you need to do is stamp them in where you want them. In this setup we’ve given you space so you can see how it behaves. Stamp one in with , jump on it to squish it and continue on. The Ledge Monster or Jumping Ledge Monster can both be used here, but bear in mind you have to jump on the Jumping Ledge Monster more than once to defeat it!
That’s it! Creating a 2D platformer can be really simple if you just have the pieces to get you going. Why not jump into the 2D Platformer Foundation now and have a go at creating a 2D platformer of your own?
