Ghost Train Template Guidelines
Getting Started#
Begin by remixing the Ghost Train Template scene, the only scene included in the Ghost Train Kit. While you can be freer with thermo in this template, please do not use more than 30 track pieces and keep your submissions under 2 minutes of play time!
In this scene you will find a custom 24 x 24 grid – in line with Grid Snap, set to 4 units – and a microchip named Scene Properties. Within this microchip are a Sun & Sky gadget, and a switch named Show Floor. You may use this switch to turn the floor visual on and off. Feel free to switch it off, or tweak the Sun & Sky gadget to your preference, but please do not tweak the floor in any way, or delete it!
Building a Track#
Firstly, set Grid Snap to 4 units. Tap to open the menu, select Guides and turn on Grid Snap . Use the Finer/Coarser buttons until your grid is set at 4 units. Now you’re ready to start making a Ghost Train!
Head back to the Ghost Train Kit while you are in your remixed Ghost Train Template scene. Select Search and search for Ghost Train Kit by MmDreamQueen.
Select the Starting Tunnel & Car element and choose a position on the floor to begin your ghost train. Please note:
- All the track pieces you place must stay within the purple floor grid.
- The track pieces must also stay upright, meaning the car must always stay at the top of the rail, and you should not rotate the track pieces vertically.
- Do not tweak any of the gadgets in the car’s microchip (including the camera).
- Do not edit the moving car sculpture.
If you wish to have an object follow the car, feel free to use the powered-down Teleporter gadget located within the microchip on the car and place it on the object of your choice. This object should not clash with the camera in any way, but you may add objects around it – for example, you could add lap bars and visible seats if you wish, and they will move with the camera in play mode.
You may edit how the tracks appear or make them invisible, but don’t turn them off. As long as your starting car is able to make it to the end of the track, then you’re golden!
Now for the fun part! Using any of the track pieces in the collection, you can now construct your own Ghost Train track. Remember to stick to the grid and ensure the ends of all the track pieces you’ve placed are connected, otherwise your train may not work correctly! Please note that while the track pieces you place must be within the purple grid, you may start and end the track as high or low in the scene as you like!
On the Starting Tunnel & car element, Scope In with + and then open its microchip with +. You’ll see a microchip named Timer, which will tell you if it takes more than two minutes to reach the end of your track in play mode. Once you’ve finished building your track and it’s less than two minutes long, you should delete this microchip. Please also be aware that the player will be able to skip your track whenever they please by holding !
If you scope in to any of the track pieces, you will find a microchip floating above the track sculpt named Track Properties. Here you can adjust the speed at which the car moves along this piece of track using the Train Speed slider.
The Pause Track also contains a Pause Length (seconds) value slider. When the train moves along this piece, it will pause at the midpoint of the track for this amount of time. You can adjust this to anywhere between 1 and 5 seconds, but please do not tweak the value slider’s Minimum/Maximum Values to go higher or lower than this.
We have also included a Door for you to use on the track. This object will detect when the car is nearby and activate the doors for you. Scope in, open the microchip, and select the Trigger Zone within – you can use this to see where the car will be before the doors open. You may not tweak the Trigger Zone in any way, but you may edit the door sculpts!
When using the Uphill Track and Downhill Track pieces, please be aware that you will need to use a finer grid than the 4 units we previously mentioned in order to add another track piece to the end of them. 2 units will be fine!
Take care when using any Right or Left-turning track pieces in your Ghost Train – they should not be flipped using . Please use the correct direction track when adding corners!
Check out the next section of these rules if you wish to add some gameplay to your Ghost Train, otherwise finish off your track by adding the Ending Track piece – this will signify the end of your track and, once reached, will trigger a doorway to the next coMmunity-submitted track!
Adding Gameplay – Target Shooting (Optional!)#
If you head back to the Ghost Train Kit, locate the Shooter Kit and stamp down the Shooter Setup into your remixed Ghost Train Template, we can turn the scene into an on-rails shooter! The controls are very simple: use the imp to move your reticule around the screen, and press to shoot. Please do not edit or tweak any of the gadgets in the Shooter Setup element!
In the Shooter Kit collection you will also find some more track pieces, and a group of Targets which can all be interacted with in some way. Once the player hovers over a target and shoots it using , the target will activate one of several different functions:
- Target will add 10 points to the player’s score and then deactivate.
- Target (Bonus) will take multiple hits before it deactivates, and this number can be set by scoping into the element and opening the Target Properties microchip. In here you should find a Number of Hits value slider – you can edit this value slider however you like, and the player will have to shoot the target as many times as you’ve set before it deactivates. You can also disable the Show Number of Hits switch if you like – that way, the number of hits will be a mystery to the player!
- Target (Hazard) will take 10 points away from the player’s score once hit, and it will also reset their multiplier (if they have one going!)
- Trigger Target will neither increase nor decrease the player’s score, instead it will simply detect if it has been hit; and Trigger Target (Toggle) will toggle between ‘on’ and ‘off’ once hit. These targets are good for triggering something on your Ghost Train ride without affecting the score. Think of them like switches!
- When a regular Target or a Bonus Target has been shot by a player, the player receives 10 points. For every five targets shot in succession, the multiplier increases by 1. The multiplier will be reset if either the player shoots a Hazard Target or does not hit a target for 4 seconds. The maximum multiplier is 10.
- Each target contains an Input and Output node, and in each target’s Target Properties microchip, there is a switch named Start Deactivated. If this is enabled, then the target will stay down until the Input node receives a signal. When the target is shot, it will then deactivate once again. You can use the Output node to trigger other things in your scene – for example, you could wire up multiple targets and have them all pop up in succession!
Feel free to edit the sculpts on any of these Targets!
Adding Gameplay – Interactive Tracks (Optional!)#
Now onto some more complex pieces: the Fork Track and the Trigger Track. The Fork Track is a single track piece which splits into two different track pieces. Inside the track you will find two nodes, one positioned on each side of the track, named Track Input 1 and Track Input 2. When a signal is given to these nodes, Track Input 1 will force the car to move along the left track, whereas Track Input 2 will move the car along the right track. This piece is useful if you want to give the player some more freedom when they ride your Ghost Train!
The Trigger Track is similar to the Pause Track, except it waits until a signal is given to its Track Input node. This could be by using the output of a target to enable the Trigger Track to progress (even the Hazard Target if you’re feeling particularly evil). If a signal is given to the Trigger Track before the player reaches the midpoint of this track piece then it will let the player right through.
Decorating Your Track#
Now you’ve finished building your track, it’s time to decorate! Feel free to use any of your favourite elements from the Dreamiverse to decorate your Ghost Train. Just make sure not to add so much to your scene that slowdowns occur, and make sure you test the Ghost Train thoroughly before submitting!
With that in mind, there are no thermo limits for this template. You should be able to enter the scene and make it through until a Doorway is triggered. Be sure to disable the Show Floor switch before you submit as well.
Please note that this scene must be Remixable when you submit it to us, but may be released Unlisted so as to not inform any of your followers that it is released. This way, we will be able to add it to our All Hallows’ Dreams event. So be careful if you’ve added any very important elements into your scene before releasing this out in the wild – those elements will need to be released too!
Still got questions? Head to our coMmunity forums(opens in new tab) and post them there - a Molecule or a fellow dreamer will surely be happy to help!
